The serious problems and necessities of sustainable development in China are described. The definitions of sustainability and process system engineering (PSE) are then discussed. In the major part of this paper, two aspects of PSE to meet sustainability are focused on: the first is inner-enterprise process integration including its methods and applications, the advanced PSE method was put forward in special; the other is inter-enterprise process integration including two integration models and some typical integration methods. Through this process systems engineering review, process integration is recommended to meet the challenges to sustainability. More than 70 key references are attached.

Stability is an important characteristic of anaerobic wastewater treatment systems. The definition and measuring parameters of stability are discussed. Moreover, the mechanism and behavior of the bioreactor operational instability caused by load shock,as well as the influence factors of stability are analyzed. The results show that the load shocks are supposed to greatly influence the operation of anaerobic reactors. The typical responses of anaerobic reactors to load shock include a decrease in performance, accumulation of volatile fatty acids, drop in pH and alkalinity, change in biogas production and composition, and sludge washout. The tolerance of anaerobic reactors to shocks is affected by the factors related to the treatment system as well as the variation of load. Accordingly, some proposals on the enhancement of stability are put forward.

Based on the principles of chemical reaction engineering, the key technology in the production of organic isocyanates - phosgenation reaction was analyzed and the reaction could be considered as a parallel-series reaction. The proper feed-in method for this kind of reaction was studied in order to get the desired conversion and selectivity. Two kinds of phosgenation reactions used in the industry – one step reaction and two-step reaction were investigated. The latter is a better method though the former method is still used in some factories. At last, several kinds of reactors used by different manufacturers were studied and recommendation was made on how to chose a proper kind of reactor in different operation conditions.

An aciduric mutant with steady hydrogen-producing capability, which was able to grow at acidic pH of 3.0,was obtained. Its capability of hydrogen production was measured in the batch culture experiment. The maximum hydrogen yield and hydrogen production rate was 1781 mL/L and 240 mL/(L•h),which were 48% and 32% higher than those of the parent strain, respectively. The results demonstrated that He-Ne laser mutagenesis could be used in the field of hydrogen-producing microorganism.

The modified scrap rubber powder (SRP) was prepared through the surface-graft technology. The structure of SRP was tested by PyGC-MS and FTIR. The results showed that the group of -SO3 was grafted onto the surface of the scrap rubber powder (SRP). The workability and mechanical properties of SRP/mortar composites were determined. The optimum ratio of modifying agent/SRP was obtained from the test of fluidity and fluidity loss. Furthermore, the modified SRP/mortar composites showed the biggest fluidity, smallest fluidity loss and highest flexural strength in comparison with original SRP/mortar composites and control mortar. The process is simple and is easy to commercialize.

Some technical concepts of process conditions for methanolization and methanation purification of ammonia synthesis feed gas are presented. The above purification process could be operated under the pressure of 5.0~30.0 MPa., but methanolization should be operated under a medium or low pressure to save energy. In the second-stage of methanolization, CO+CO2 at the inlet should be 1.8%~2% and CO+CO2 at the outlet should be 0.1%~0.15% so that the energy consumption could be the least. Autothermic reaction of methanation could not take place when purifying the synthesis feed gas. By analyzing and assessing three supplemental ways of heating, there are some difficult problems, such as safety concerns of the equipment, inversion of the operation order, etc., when heating unreacted gas in methanation with exit hot gas from ammonia synthesis.

All of the above pollutants complied with the national pollution emission standards. This project found a feasible way of dust and asphalt gas control in a small sized carbon factory.
